Achieving Objectives for Children and Young People

A report to the County Council’s Cabinet shows there has been good progress in achieving the aims and objectives set out in the Children and Young People’s Plan (CYPP).

The CYPP, which runs from 2008-2011, is reviewed annually. It involves a range of agencies and services working together.

Partners include Leicestershire County Council, the NHS, borough and district councils, Leicestershire Constabulary, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue and a wide range of voluntary and community sector organisations.

Examples of good progress include:

• Attainment at Key Stage 4 (age 16) has improved at higher than the national rate.
• Children in care are significantly less likely to miss education.
• Stability of placement for children in care has improved significantly.
• Numbers of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) are ahead of target, despite the impact of the recession.
  
• However, some areas continue to be challenging, for instance:
• Reducing obesity. A multi-agency strategy has been created to tackle this.
• Reducing rates of teenage conception.
  
  However, the most recent data shows an improving situation.
  

Effective safeguarding remains a priority area of work for the partners. Ivan Ould, the County Council’s Children and Young People’s Service, said: “I am delighted that objectives set out in the Children and Young People’s Plan are being achieved.

“Partnership working across Leicestershire is helping children and young people and having a positive impact on their lives.”

The key priorities identified in the 2008-11 plan remain unchanged.

Cabinet will be asked to approve the plan at its meeting on Tuesday, June 27th.
