  • Wedding Tips from Leicestershire's 'greenest family'

Picture of Lucy Greene and Will getting married

Prince William and Kate Middleton may be planning their own big day, but members of Leicestershire’s "greenest family" hope their smaller scale nuptials will inspire others to reduce waste and save money.

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership’s own environmentally minded fictional Greene family will see daughter Lucy marry her partner Will ahead of the Royal Wedding next month.

The family, who were created by Leicestershire Waste Partnership which is made up of the county, district and borough councils to illustrate how reusing goods can form a big part of family life, hope their wedding tips will inspire others who are tying the knot.

With an average wedding costing thousands, couples can follow Lucy’s lead and reuse and save money at the same time by following tips such as:

    • Growing your own flowers for the big day and either letting guests take them home as favours or using them in your garden afterwards
    • Using jars or tins with holes in them as outdoor tea light holders
    • Finding a fab vintage wedding dress from a charity shop or, if suitable, using the bride's mum's for a sentimental touch
    • Saving wine bottles and use them as candle holders
    • Making your own confetti out of herb flowers, lavender buds and wild seeds

Tony Kershaw, Chairman of Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: When couples do their research and realise how much various elements of a wedding cost, they can be surprised as things do add up.

Many wedding items are used only once but by following Lucy’s tips people can reuse to ensure things don’t go to waste and to keep costs down.

Reusing can add an extra element to a wedding and can lend itself to a range of original, vintage or even quirky themes helping make the day one to remember.”

Leicestershire is already the top county partnership for recycling but by mending, selling and donating items people can give them a new lease of life and avoid generating waste altogether. For further information visit: www.lesswaste.org.uk
