Work to spruce up nearly 200 miles of Leicestershire roads and over 100 miles of pavements gets underway this week.
Over the next few months, almost £2.5 million will be spent on resurfacing and sealing to extend the life of the county’s roads and pavements by up to 10 years.
'Slurry sealing' and 'surface dressing' are the most cost-effective ways of keeping roads and pavements in top condition - these preventative maintenance techniques cost only 10-20% of the price of other resurfacing methods.
Each year, teams of staff work throughout the county from April to the end of September on the scheme. This takes place during the spring and summer as the dressings bond more effectively and dry much quicker during the warmer weather.
Residents who will be affected are notified by letter of the work beforehand and this year, people can also view the schedules on the County Council’s website.
To warn motorists about loose chippings, 20mph signs will be displayed where surface dressing work is being carried out. Drivers are urged to keep to the speed limit to prevent damage to their cars or to the road surface.
Lesley Pendleton, County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We work very hard to ensure there is minimal disruption to householders and pedestrians in the area.
“As part of our customer involvement, we also encourage residents to complete the customer satisfaction questionnaire they will receive when work is taking place outside their property.
“Leicestershire has some of the best maintained roads in the UK and we aim to make sure we stay at the top of our game. This feedback will help us to monitor and improve our performance and service to the residents of Leicestershire.”
