  • Melton Carnegie Museum Exhibition Celebrates One Hundred Years of Girl Guiding

Picture of girl guides from the 1920's

Calling all Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows – past and present!

In the 100 years since Agnes Baden Powell established her Girl Guides Association thousands of local girls have been pushing the boundaries, enjoying new experiences and having their voices heard through the Guides, Brownies and Rainbows.

An exhibition charting this fascinating story is on display at Leicestershire County Council’s Melton Carnegie Museum until Sunday 3rd April.

The exhibition includes a wealth of photographs and memorabilia of Leicestershire and Rutland’s Guides, Brownies and Rainbows from the earliest days to the present. See Leicestershire’s 1st Guide Company on parade, what was the first Guides’ badge? What colour was the first Brownies uniform?

To complement the exhibition the museum’s half term children’s activities will continue the Girl Guiding theme with ‘Leaders of the Pack’. On Thursday 24th February there will be free activities with a Guides and Scouts theme. Pre booking is required. Sessions begin at 10.15am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.15pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, said:
"This is a fantastic exhibition that explores Girl Guiding right from the very beginning and the display has some fascinating items that tell the story of how it all began 100 years ago. The exhibition is a must for anyone that is or was a Girl Guide or for those wanting to find out how this amazing movement came about."

    Melton Carnegie Museum is open 10am – 4.30pm 7 days a week.

For further information about the exhibition contact Janette Pearson – Archivist for Girl Guiding Leicestershire on jan.pearson@leics.gov.uk or phone: 0116 2571080.

For photo opportunities please contact the Press Office on: 0116 305 6242

For exhibition and children’s activities please contact Jenny Dancey, Keeper, Melton Carnegie Museum, 0116 305 3860.
