  • Make Easter Wrapping Egg-stinct!

Leicestershire residents can pick up top tips on how to reduce their ‘egg-cessive’ packaging waste whilst out shopping this March.

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is holding a series of roadshows across the county to giving practical advice on making Easter gifts and choosing reduced packaged eggs this Easter.

Easter eggs generate an extra 3,000 tonnes of waste in the UK every year, making it clear everyone can do their bit to reduce waste.

The events will display samples of reduced packaged Easter eggs, colourful hand-made eggs and step-by-step guides to take away showing people how to make their own.

The roadshows also offer handy hints for avoiding everyday over packaged items, clever ways of re-using it and an amnesty giving shoppers the chance to get rid of any packaging. To help reduce waste sent to landfill, everything collected will be recycled, where possible.

Cllr Michael Rook, Chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnersip, said: "The roadshows are a great opportunity for people to pick up handy hints about cutting waste at Easter and throughout the year."

The roadshows will be held between 10am and 3pm at:

    • Sainsbury's, St Mary's Place, Market Harborough - Friday, 5th March
    • Waitrose, St Johns Court, Blaby – Saturday, 6th March
    • Morrisons, Whitwick Road, Coalville - Tuesday, 9th March
    • Loughborough Market, Market Street – Thursday, 11th March
    • Asda, Barwell Lane, Hinckley - Saturday, 13th March
    • Bell Street, Wigston – Wednesday, 17th March

If you can’t make it to a roadshow why not think about different options to the usual chocolate eggs to reduce the amount of packaging going to waste this Easter?

    You could:

    • Buy foil-wrapped, not boxed, eggs
    • Choose eggs with less packaging or recycled packaging
    • Make your own Easter eggs using an egg mould
    • Hand-paint and decorate eggshells. Make a small hole in both ends of the shell and blow the egg out first
    • Make a papier-mâché egg for homemade Easter gifts.
