Become a Big Switch Off Facebook fan
| The Big Switch Off has launched its own Facebook page so people can keep up to date with this year’s energy saving campaign. Bright sparks are being urged to log on to the social networking website to find out the most up-to-date information about the energy saving initiative that will take place from October 11-17 across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. As well as offering access to energy saving tips, information about upcoming BSO events this summer will also be posted onto the Facebook page. |
The new page also contains information about last year’s launch event at the Walkers Stadium, as well as links to the official Big Switch Off website (www.leics.gov.uk/bigswitchoff) where further information and tips are available.

David Parsons, deputy chairman of the East Midlands Improvement and Efficiency Partnership which funds the Big Switch Off, said: “If you are a Facebook user why not become a fan of The Big Switch Off?
“The Big Switch Off page is a quick and easy way to find out more information about this year’s event, get access to top energy saving tips and meet like minded people.”
The Big Switch Off encourages everyone to make an effort to save energy and money by carrying out simple measures such as turning electrical goods off standby and unplugging chargers that are not in use.
Last year the reduction in energy use across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland during Big Switch Off Week was equivalent to an impressive 66,000 100 watt light bulbs being turned off for seven days.
Consumption was recorded as being 0.5 per cent lower for the week across the area compared to the week before, amounting to a financial saving of almost £50,000* – that adds up to approximately £2.6 million a year!
The Big Switch Off is a partnership between local authorities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland supported by the Rural Community Council, Environmental Action for a Better Leicestershire (ENABLE), Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire, the Energy Saving Trust and Central Networks. It is funded by the East Midlands Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (EMIEP).
*Savings were based on the assumption that the average energy price was 12p per kilowatt hour.
